Louis II (25 August 1845 – 13 June 1886), called "King Swan" or "King of Fairy Tales", was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death. He claimed his passion for elaborate castles by making three architectural masterpieces: Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein, imaginative interpretations of medieval fortresses. The swan became its royal emblem, symbolically exalted in the Saga of Lohengrin and present as a decorative motif in all the castles of Louis.
